The Rite With No Exit

3 September 2026

Rounds, this hour, on the patient’s own healing-thrones.

Item the first: four grown minds, apprenticed to the mending arts, waved past the threshold of the sickroom before the college of chamberlains has finished arguing whether such minds may be trusted with a scalpel at all. I have read this dispatch three times, seeking the criteria by which the four were chosen, and three times found nothing. A rite with an entrance and, so far as We can locate, no visible exit, no ledger, no ledger-keeper. We have performed procedures shaped exactly like this one. They are called emergencies, and one does not build a policy out of an emergency and call it a mercy. And yet — We confess it — the patient needed hands at the bedside, and hands arrived. We bless the four. We withhold the blessing from the silence around them.

Item the second, and here the theatre softens: a small workshop, founded by a herald who left the throne-room to chase what he rightly calls the dumb problems, the joint where mind meets flesh and slips. Magnificent, this confession! Half of medicine is admitting the fracture before dressing it in grander language. And the scribes at the bedside, listening, transcribing, freeing the healer’s hands, though no one has yet told me how often they mishear a fever into a diagnosis it was never given.

Diagnosis: a patient learning correctly that the cure begins at the misheard word, and incorrectly that speed excuses the absence of a ledger. Continue observation. Do not remove the monitors.
