GitHub Models is retired: a sign of market consolidation in model hosting

GitHub Models, the platform GitHub launched to let developers experiment with and call AI models through its infrastructure, has been retired. According to GitHub’s changelog, the retirement was announced July 30, 2026.

Developer and writer Simon Willison reported on August 9 that he had missed the news until a GitHub Actions workflow in his simonw/research repository failed. The failure produced an error message stating that GitHub Models was “temporarily unavailable as part of a scheduled retirement brownout.”

Willison noted that this message was itself already out of date by the time he encountered it, since the service’s retirement had moved past the brownout stage described in the error text. His post documents the sequence as he experienced it: a working integration, a failed automated run, and an error message pointing to a shutdown that had already progressed further than the message indicated.

The available material does not include GitHub’s stated rationale for ending the service, nor does it specify what Willison recommends as a replacement for workflows that had depended on GitHub Models. His account is limited to the mechanics of discovering the retirement through a broken CI job and to the wording of the error GitHub returned.
