Spotify will label 'AI Persona' profiles and exclude their music from recommendations

Spotify announced on August 11 that it will introduce “AI Persona” labels for artist profiles built around AI-generated identities, according to TechCrunch AI. Music tied to these profiles will be excluded by default from the platform’s editorial picks, algorithmic playlists, and personalized recommendations.

The move, as reported, marks the first time Spotify has formally distinguished AI-generated artist identities from human ones at the profile level, rather than addressing individual tracks. Under the new system, listeners could still search for and play music from labeled AI Persona accounts, but that music would not surface through the discovery channels that drive most listening on the platform, including Discover Weekly-style algorithmic playlists and curated editorial placements.

TechCrunch AI frames the policy as a response to a growing volume of AI-generated music appearing on streaming services, some of it uploaded without clear disclosure of its origins. Spotify’s labeling and exclusion approach gives the company a mechanism to flag such content without removing it outright.
